kickstart not returning

The reason for the small locking screw is to align a small drilling in the kick start sleeve with another small drilling in the gearbox casing . This is supposed to lubricate the kick start shaft and I do mean 'supposed' .

Agreed, as WM says it should be a press fit. I have seen the lug broken off the back of the gearbox because it's obviously under quite a heavy load. The best solution would be an oversized tube but you could try Loctite bearing fit to get around a strip, be difficult getting it into the hole without wiping it all off but you could possibly squirt some into the grub screw hole as you fit it to top it up. From what you say it doesn't sound like it's really loose fit so it might be enough - if you can get the stuff in there it's quite a large area - but as you say the grub screw certainly won't do it alone.

Hi Paul,
In answer to your question. The 1931 parts lists item D-706 and shows the kickstart tube in the gearbox. It also lists D-594 locking screw for tube 3/16 in. In practice the tube is an interference fit and normally difficult to remove.  The screw locates it . So also prevents the tube from roatating as well.  So yes you will have to investigate further.

I need the help of the hive mind..........

1931 Model 9. The title says it all.  I can start the bike but the kickstart doesn't return unless I pull it up.  Instant thought was the return spring has broken so I removed the kickstart to see - but it hasn't.

The inner end of the spring locates in a hole in an outer sleeve (I think that's the best way to describe it) that is around the shaft.  The problem is that this sleeve is also rotating on the shaft. Pretty obviously it shouldn't, it should be fixed somehow.  In the rear of the gearbox casing I can see a small pin that is sticking out of the box and level with the shaft.  I'm wondering if this should be locating the sleeve but has come adrift- but it really doesn't seem man enough for the job.

Before I start removing the box and pulling it all to pieces (I really, REALLY don't want to have to do that) can anyone advise me how that sleeve should be located, suggestions as to what the problem may be - and whether the gearbox really has to come to bits?
