Russ, I had a 650 Panther in my youth and didn't know about reaming valve guides after fitting - they can nip in on the 'fit' slightly. If I opened up, the bike would lose power and waffle to a halt with no compression. Then after a couple of minutes I'd hear a plink noise as the valve snapped shut again. Being a fairly soft compression engine presumably the piston was well clear of the part-open valve. Maybe it's that.
Cheers rick

thanks Rick I sorted out the issue it was the Clutch....I'd renewed all the Clutch mechanism complete and set up the correct clearance for the bridge setting and worked well for the first couple of runs but once everything had settled down the clearance must have disappeared I think the new operating rod must have expanded once it got hot making the clutch slightly engage but not enough to notice any perceivable slip but enough to affect the engagement of the kickstart anyway I backed off the clutch adjusting nut a 1/4 turn and the issue was resolved.....job done

ok chaps I got an interesting issue.....bike starts ok on the KS after 1 or 2 kicks go for longish ride stop for petrol bike wont start......using the usual kick start priming procedure so up to compression and just past jump the kick start nought the kick start just goes down with slight resistance almost like it's become disconnected somehow....I'm guessing it could be one of a couple of things 1. the Valve lifter has stuck in the Exhaust valve slightly open position somehow 2. Exhaust Valve is getting stuck open (I doubt it) 3. the kickstart quadrant has become detached from the shaft.......I did check the spark after I couldn't start it and it was good......I sat for 10 minutes to let the old girl cool off and then bumped her it started within 5 yrds......seems a bit of a strange one I haven't had it apart yet as I thought I'd ask you guys first....I'm off out on it in a bit to see if it starts on the KS just to see if the issue occurs again but I'll only be going around the block just incase LOL I suspect it will happen again things don't usually magically fix themselves mores the pity anyway it'll be easier to push home especially in this weather (Phew)......as always chaps your advice is much appreciated......cheers
