Title: 1927 Sunbeam model 9 failed Exhaust pushrod
Post by: Russ on August 04, 2025, 02:38:14 PM
Hi All
a bit of a long shot here.....the other day my old 27' on a run out started massively misfiring and ground to a halt and it wasn't to start again I couldn't see what the issue was until I got it home (another mile long push in baking hot weather LOL) as I started to dismantle the rocker mechanism it was then that I could see what the issue was....the Exhaust Pushrod was quite corroded in one particular spot and had disintegrated and bent (see attached photo) which obviously threw the valve timing out causing all the misfiring and breaking down.....so in my desperation the question is would any of you happen to have a spare Exhaust Pushrod kicking about (LOL) or better still both inlet and Exhaust pushrods For a 1927 Sunbeam model 9 that you might be willing to sell me or failing that might you know someone who might have them that they're willing to sell me......by the way the pushrods in 4 pieces now as I attempted to get the cup and ball ends out but not an easy job as the push rod seems to be a tube within a tube...any assistance would be greatly appreciated.....kindest Regards......Russ J

Hi Russ, I don't know if my 1937 Model 9 can be considered as a reference but it might give you an idea. I once had to lengthen the pushrods with silver steel rings. The balls are soft soldered in the tube because there is no pulling force. For your case you have the original pushrod with all measures. I would use it as for a reverse engineering task. The material is an open question but I suppose even that can be solved.
Cheers, Thomas

hey thanks Thomas Ha I tried to pull the ends out of the tube but it wouldn't budge I heated till it was almost melting LOL but they wouldn't shift.....I'm on the case of getting some made using my one good one as a template.....so watch this space hopefully back on the road in the next week or so.....cheers

here we are my new Push rods almost finished.....yay.....just need some fine tuning and nickel plating and we're back on the road these blighters aren't going to break anytime soon certainly not in my life time....LOL.....anyway wont be this weekend though off to Beaulieu Autojumble...
note: they are exactly the same length it's a bit of an optical illusion :)

Looks pretty good, Russ! Are they made from a tube? Cheers, Thomas

I couldn't get Chromoly Steel tube in the size I needed so I used Stainless Steel tube 11mm OD x 1mm thk silver steel for the cup and ball which were heat treated.......these pushrods aren't under any great stress and these new pushrods will 1. never rust out like the old ones especially after I've Nickel plated them and 2. they're never going to bend or distort that's for sure in fact when the bike has disappeared in a cloud of rust in a 1000 years time the only thing left will be the Pushrods.....LOL.......cheers
