I purchased the frosted on from Ebay and hopefully I can make it fit with a bit of jiggling.....

Have you tried a  local glass cutters to make a frosted one to size. You gan usually get one cut from an off cut.

It could be flat frosted; fluted, or with a sort of cats eye pattern, all are correct for the era.

Whilst studying my Lucas catalogue for 1936-57 parts the headlamp specified for all Subeam models is the DU142F for that era

Delving further into the catalogue this headlamp was fitted with a type C flat diffused glass as fitted to the nice replica from that Chech Republic supplier at

http://www.vintage-replica.cz/indexE.htm.

Lucas part number is 516173 and it is  7 7/8 inches diameter.... and I always thought it should be flutted....

Thanks for all the replies. I will do some internet research tomorrow.

not fluted but still period, double check your size; you may well need to change the rime at the same time as flat glass used a different rim to domed

They turn up on ebay here, fluted ones look good but frosted would do.

Same in Germany!  :) John Ruskin would say: Pay half, pay twice. "Unfortunately", John only asks for the glass.

It has become obvious here in UK, with with the huge amount of imported rubbish that you only get what you pay for.

Thomas

Indeed, "Vintage Replica" delivers excellent stuff... but for "excellent" prices, of course. I got my tail light from them. Really nice brass work and worth the price of more than 100 quid. However, single glasses will be difficult to get, I suppose. Glass is no rocket science, hence, I see no risk of buying a complete beam unit for only 30 quid.

Stay away from Indian made stuff unless you can see one first, it can be very variable quality.

However this guys stuff is absolutely first class and probably better than original.

I guess it is a Lucas 8 inch fluted flat glass you are looking for? Like hen's teeth I'm afraid as Ebayer's can get over £100 for original ones! Just occasionally they can be found at autojumbles.

Hello,
Can anyone advise a supplier of flat headlamp glass please. I have studied the list of suppliers on the website but cant find any there. The domed lens on my 1935 Model 8 just does not look right.
