Title: Model 9 Magneto Sprocket Housing
Post by: mthearle on August 07, 2023, 12:16:20 PM
Hi Everyone,

I believe my 1930 Model 9 is missing housing for the magneto sprocket.

Would anyone have one they would be prepared to part with?

Thanks
Mick

No Mick, you are not missing the housing - it was only fitted as standard to the M90 and M80, not to the other models.

Thanks Paul,

Is there meant to be some sort of sealing arrangement there? At the moment I just have the opening through the timing chest where the sprocket goes through.

Thanks
Mick

No Mick, there is no seal. The aperture is quite large to allow for chain adjustment. Strangely, very little oil comes through this large hole- I suspect that the sprocket acts as an oil slinger, and any oil thrown off just slides down the inner edges of the cover.

Cheers Paul.  I'll go with that and see what happens.

Thanks

Another thing to bear in mind about the outrigger for the magneto drive is that not all the sprockets were machined to run in the bearing.
I have two Sunbeams and neither are running an outrigger including my M90.
