Title: Deliveries to the continent
Post by: Thomas on May 27, 2021, 08:55:59 AM
Hi all!

It seems that orders from the continent now begin to directly feel Brexit. Some months ago, I ordered new valves for my Sunbeam. After finishing they were dispatched via UPS and arrived in Germany the next day. Then, however, they lay in their access point for full 9 weeks. Requested information via email and telephone repeatedly contradicted each other and/or lead to nowhere. The service line simply did not know what was going on. So, if somebody plans to order parts from the UK I recommend to do it early and/or be prepared for a massive delay plus significant custom.

Cheers, Thomas

Morning Thomas
I don't think you ordered any valves from the club as I would have used our Post Office as the shipper and not DPD. Not sure who you are so I cannot check but anyway it is disappointing to learn of EU import problems.

Good morning, Vic!

No, no, the valves are from GS Valves (I should have mentioned that). I learned from my custom service that such parcels are presently potentially in trouble. Better perhaps to find a friend in the UK, sending the stuff to him and then as private mail abroad. I just wanted to point towards this problem.

All the best, Thomas

Its political sulking in  a big way and was entirely anticipated even before Brexit.

I had similar expieriences with ordering from the UK

My advise is TO NOT USE UPS. After Brexit they dont know what they are doing.

Via Royal Mail worked better.

Greeting, Hennie

Today I got a small parcel from the club shop. That works fine within 10 days! However, after Brexit we have to pay customs duty. In my case 50% for the items, 25% shipping and 25% customs duty. This is a bit problematic for overseas members and I wonder if there is a better solution.
Cheers, Thomas

Hello Thomas;

The calculation is not right. In the EU you have to pay VAT on top and somtimes import taxes.

So that can only amount in 20% aditional, not 50%. You should question goverment websites on this.

Greetings, Hennie

My calculation is not right? Well, if I pay about 20 Euros for the items, about 10 Euros shipping and about 10 Euros customs duty I get 50%, 25% and 25%.

Hello Thomas;

The calculation you mentiond is Ok, but the general calculation is not right. 20% VAT of 20 euro's = 4 euro's.

greetings Hennie

PS: I have the samen discussion with UPS

Well, I got a bill with these numbers. I fear we will not alter the problem with exports to the continent by debating percentages.

Import and exporting goods have always been a pain. I've just purchased a MT110 replicia tail lamp, and was surprised to be refunded the VAT (20%).  Not every company can relaim it though and pass the saving to their customers. What I did get landed with was a charge for additional customs paperwork. Like it or not the postal charges anywhere have gone up in the last few years. What I was surprised was not to get landed with import duty by HMRC. As a result got the lamp for about the same I would have paied a few years ago before Brexit.

Looking at import duty for the UK there's none payable for anything below £135, 2.5% between £135 and £630 and varible depending on the goods classification above £630 So it pays to do a bit of research to work out the most efficient way to purchase.  The EU must have similar banding?

Yes the postal service works well for anything under 2Kg.

Of course the real solution is 'Global free trade' but too much money being creamed off by the bureaucrats, for nothing?, for that to happen.
