Title: Preventing gas leaks in carbide lighting
Post by: Ken the Sec on March 01, 2021, 06:27:03 PM
I am in the process of restoring a gas lighting set.  Is there any folklore or advice on the best material to put on the pipe union and jet threads to prevent leaks in those places?  Same for the hose nipples.  Thanks!

Hi Ken, I think standard PTFE tape would be fine.
Its definately worth making sure the joints are gas tight as a friend who whent caving found out. He droped the O ring that sealed the carbide canister on his helmet. The result when he lit the lamp was a pretty spectacular fire, fortunately he managwed to throw off the helmet and only suffed a singed eye brow.  :)
