Title: 1936 Model 8 rear wheel bearing query
Post by: matchlessg80cs on November 14, 2021, 05:09:22 PM
Hello would anyone know the modern manufactures reference number for the rear wheel bearings for my 36 Model 8?
I know I should dismantle the wheel/ remove bearing & measure it but that would mean I couldn't wheel the thing around in my tight storage area after I've dismantled it ! Hoping that someone already has this information!
Thank In advance
Al

Hello, Al. I can't help with the bearing size unfortunately, but if the wheel bearing arrangement is the same as on my 1937 Lion (interchangeable wheels for sidecar use) the bearings will be fitted on a carrier tube. If they are, don't be surprised to find that the threaded adjustment end has sheared off. I understand it's a common issue with this type, so you may have to make space/time allowances for a replacement to be made or found. They weren't being made by the club so I had to make a pair myself - yes, both front and rear had succumbed >:(

I have a very good sketch of the 1936 350/250 rear wheel assembly, with some comments on it by Ken Green (one of the original Register crew at Marstons). I will e-mail it through to you. This particular design is unique to this year and model.

Phil, that would be really helpful, when I dismantled it, it appeared to have a sealed bearing in the non drive side ( the one that has failed) not the adjustable taper rollers I expected ( or was told we're in there by the manual!).
Could you send it to me at apgodfrey@me.com ?
Many thanks in advance

Hi Steve / greybeard !
Thank you for your reply, it appears from phil that the 36 M8 has a unique rear wheel bearing arrangement. I look forward to seeing the drawing mentioned & hope it's not too unique ! I am used to the shortcoming of the 500 rear wheel having just had a complete stub axel and modern bearings manufactured for old my 36 Model 9 sport of the sale year, a very poor design ! Thanks A
