Title: Axle threads
Post by: AndyB on January 03, 2018, 02:04:35 PM
Hi All, and Happy New Year!
My 1932 Lion project needs new axles, and I need to confirm that the thread form is CEI.
The axles are 9/16 diameter and 20tpi.
I'm sure someone here will know for sure.
Thanks
AndyB

7/16" CEI and above can be obtained in 20tpi as well as 26tpi. See B.S.811:1951. Your 9/16 X 20 axles are almost certainly   CEI.  There are several suppliers of both SS and zinc plated fasteners to the 20tpi standard.

Thanks Paul,
I had more or less come to that conclusion. I just wanted a bit of reassurance on the thread form before committing to getting some made.
I have a drawing which has been compiled from the damaged parts which came with the project bike (I also have an identical bike which has good axles) and I intend to have the end caps made in stainless steel, using a silver steel axle and stainless fixings.

Silver steel is a definite NO for wheel spindles - it's much too brittle. Something like an EN16 is much more appropriate. I'm sure your machinist can advise.
