As everyone has said, this is a Sunbeam 4-speed box. The AU 520 series first appeared on the 1935 Model Year machines, and was used on all models.

Sorry for late response, but I've been away.

do you mean where the operating arm fits the gear selector shaft on the outside of the gearbox?.
My understanding is that there should be a leather washer under the large hollow nut and that gets tightened to compress the leather to form a seal..John

Thanks Vic, it is a 4 speed.

Is it good news that its a Sunbeam gearbox rather than a Burman?  Are selector shaft seals available to purchase anywhere, I have quite a leak from mine.

Thanks, John

Definitely a Sunbeam box and likely to be 4 speed.

Thanks Vic,

Hope you can see enough of the gearbox on this shot.

Sounds like a Sunbeam box from 1934/5 Can you post a picture?

Hello,

Could anyone help with dating my gearbox please.  I have been online and cannot find any models of Burman that look anything like mine.  I have a bad oil leak from the gear selector bush and wondered if I could remove the front plate safely without all the internals jumping out!

The gearbox is marked AU/520/0/L642

Thanks and regards

John.
